What is Cipango ?
Cipango is a kind of Neverland, a dreamed Japan where “Gold is being found in abundance” wrote Marco Polo who never put a single foot on it. Two centuries passed and on October the 12th 1492 Chrisopher Colombus named San Salvador some Bahamas island being sure it was a part of the same archipelago.
Creating my own import/export company after seven years as an employee, I wanted a name that embodies travel, discovery and simply the fact that no matter where you go and how difficult is the trip, you will always find something interesting in the end even if it is absolutely not what you expected first.
Some of the best wine makers and negociants from Bordeaux, Burgundy, Rhone Valley and Champagne are already part of the adventure. Welcome aboard!

Bordeaux is the most “civilized” vineyard of France, in all the meanings of this term, good or bad. Around 160 grands crus classified wineries are sold all over the world by more than 400 negociant house. The last great fact in Bordeaux’s immemorial history occurred in 2009 when several of the greatest toscan wineries (Masseto, Solaia …) decided to trust a little pool of Bordeaux negociant to handle their international distribution soon followed by the greatests Californian (Opus one..), Argentinians, chileans…..
Diva is a very well established negociant house with direct access to all the greatest bottles sold in Bordeaux : All the premiers crus classés, Masseto, Opus One or Solaia are trusting them with direct allocations. - Domaine Dubreuil-Fontaine 17 hectares, 19 differents « climats » and 2 monopoles, mostly in Volnay and Pernand Vergelesses, Corton Charlemagne, Corton Perrieres, Corton Bressandes and Corton clos du roi are the most prestigious (all grand cru classified).
- Chateau de Melin 26 hectares organically conducted settled in Côte de Beaune with 17 different appelations. From Bourgogne hautes cotes de Beaune to the most prestigious like Meursault, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, Chambolle Musigny and many others.
- Domaine des monts luisants 3.4 hectares from great terroirs (Morey Saint Denis "monts luisants" premier cru, Corton red and Clos de la Roche grand cru) grapes are picked whole and not destemmed before a very soft and precise cushing by feet. Ageing is very short (10 months in french oak). These are among the greatest of the cote des nuits with a very long ageing potential
- Domaine Bertrand Bachelart 15 hectares in Maranges, Saint Aubin, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet and Pommard
My winemaker-partners - Soutiran and Germain Pidansat - represents two very different facets of the champagne appleation. Soutiran is a family owned winery settled in the grand cru classified village of Ambonnay (where many great champagne brands like Roederrer or Taittinger grow the grapes that will give their top cuvée). Their 11 hectares are all grand cru classified and their production already exported in more than 50 countries, is regularly high rated by the best critics like Suckling or Wine Advocate.
On the other side, Germain Pidansat, a 40 hectares family owned winery settled in the southern part of the appellation known as “Côte des bars” gives affordable bottles with aromatic and lively champagnes below 14 euros EXW for the first cuvées. Vintage and rosés champagnes are also great!

Laurent Tardieu is a « micro-negociant » with very few but very good wines from all the Rhône valley north and south. Winegrower partners have been slowly selected in twenty years; now Laurent Tardieu proposes all the “crus des côtes du Rhône” like Saint Joseph, Hermitage, Cornas or Chateauneuf du Pape.
These wines are high rated by the best critics (Suckling and Wine Advocate). Please note that to guarantee this quality and this portfolio some of the appelations are released in small quantities, if you have interest, take your decision quickly.

Being a wine professional for seven years taught me how much time and money wine importers loses with paperwork and logistics… Cipango Wines has its own warehouse with all required authorizations to export.
Located in Reims, the very heart of Champagne, two hours from Burgundy and four hours from Rhone valley, it's the ideal place to reunite your orders from all the winemakers and negociant I represent. In the end you have only place to charge the wines, one purchaser with one excise number (but several winemakers) therefore save time and money!
